You may be wondering why I am doing a post on the Cricut Expression when the new Cricut Explore Air 2 is all the rage right now. Well here's the thing one of my good online friends purchased the new Cricut Explore Air 2 and was kind enough to gift me her Cricut Expression. I was super excited mainly because I wanted to be able to customize doll clothes for My Pretty Brown Doll so it was beyond awesome that she would gift me her used machine. She made it clear to me prior to sending that unlike the new model which uses online software to create designs this particular model is a stand alone machine that uses cartridges to create the designs. With that information in mind I set the machine up and was ready to create but here are
Five things I wish I had known before I made that first cut:
1: 'Flip' is not the same as 'mirror' so when you are creating designs to iron onto fabric as I wanted to do you need your design to print backwards in order to show up the right way on your fabric. The Cricut Expression has a 'Flip' feature that I assumed would create that effect for me, this feature does work for images however you have to do an extra step for letters. In order for words to show up correctly on your fabric you actually have to enter them backwards in addition to using the 'Flip' feature; for example 'My Crochet Life' would have to be entered as 'yM tehcorC efiL' to read correctly when you apply to your fabric. 2. To order Vinyl and Cartridges online. I was so excited to get started with the machine that I ran to Michaels and purchased vinyl and a cutting mat and other tools that I thought I would need to make my first cut a success. Luckily Michaels was having a sale on the Cricut merchandise but even still it was a pretty penny and I quickly realized you don't get a lot of vinyl for the price, especially when you are basically using vinyl for 'practicing' which is what I ended up doing. 3. To keep a tape measure close by and even then you are still probably going to cut the wrong size, maybe this tip should be practice your cut on paper because unlike the newer versions where you can design things like tote bags and t-shirts right online you are basically playing with the size until it comes out the way you want with the Cricut Expression and again we are not going to talk about the vinyl I wasted… is there practice vinyl lol somebody let a sister know the tips and tricks on getting the right size the first time on the Cricut Expression… which brings me to number 4
4. Tutorials for the Cricut Expression are 5+ years old yeah so like nobody is using this machine anymore and although you may find tutorials just know they are old, still helpful but I was like geez so did everybody just throw the Cricut Expression in the trash. Like come on people the machine still works, I know somebody out there is still using it. Oh it's just me, so I guess I need to make some updated tutorials.
5. That you can connect the Cricut Expression to your computer, I know, I know you can't use Design Space but you can connect it to your computer using an adapter and use your own images via the software Craft Room. I haven't tried the feature out yet but good to know that it is an option.
Using Cricut Expression With Computer
Overall I am still excited with this gift and I am definitely going to be pushing it to the limits to see how creative I can get with it, I'm sure I will have to upgrade at some point but like my Grandma say 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' and this Cricut Expression is working just fine!
